Not one, not two, but three Arizona cities are ranked among the Top 10 best places for veterans to live in a report just released by NerdWallet. No other state has more than one city in the Top 10 and Arizona has three!
Phoenix suburb Goodyear is ranked third overall behind only Beavercreek, Ohio and Madison, Alabama. NerdWallet noted that veterans in Goodyear have an unemployment rate of 1.5%, the lowest on the top 10 list. According to the 2013 US census more than 6,300 veterans call Goodyear home.
Sierra Vista finished at number six on the list. NerdWallet noted that veterans make up about 28% of the total population and also pointed out, “when it comes to job opportunities, Sierra Vista leads the top 10 list for two of the most popular industries among veterans: over 21% of jobs are in public administration and 7% of positions are in transportation, warehousing and utilities.”
The third city to crack the Top 10 is Maricopa – coming in at number eight. Maricopa and Maricopa County were singled out for offering “services for veterans including programs focusing on health care, homelessness, affordable housing, down-payment assistance, home improvement, court- and law-related programs, continuing education and skills training and employment.”
The NerdWallet rankings focused on two key areas…..economic opportunity and community. The study found that veterans stay close to the military community. All the cities on the Top 10 list have at least one military base nearby.
