Most of us have heard about the importance of a good night’s sleep. The benefits range from maintaining a healthy weight to improving our ability to remember to avoiding serious health issues such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
But did you know that the position you sleep in can also affect your health? New research shows that snoozing on your side appears to cut the risk of some neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Compared to sleeping on your back or stomach, sleeping on your side seems to allow the brain to remove waste chemicals more efficiently…..waste chemical that may contribute to the development of such conditions.

One of the study’s researchers, Dr. Maiken Nedergaard, PhD, said a distinct biological feature of sleep is to ‘clean up’ the mess that accumulates in our brain while we are awake. “Many types of dementia are linked to sleep disturbances, including difficulties in falling asleep,” said Dr. Nedergaard. “It is increasingly acknowledged that these sleep disturbances may accelerate memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease. Our finding brings new insight into this topic by showing it is also important what position you sleep in.”
So make it a priority to get some good sleep this weekend…..preferably, on your side!
