The Arizona Hospital and Healthcare Association partners with organizations, across our state, who are interested in working together to reach our goal of making Arizona the Healthiest State in the Nation! One of those organizations is the American Diabetes Association (ADA). According to the ADA, nearly 700,000 Arizonans have diabetes and many have prediabetes. Below is a guest blog that addresses how Arizonans can make some lifestyle changes to reverse pre-diabetes before it’s too late!
Let’s face it. There are millions of reasons why we don’t take time to make healthy lifestyle choices. Kids, jobs, cat videos on the Internet – we’re all busy. Whatever the reason, there’s no excuse for not taking care of yourself.
While many people know that type 2 diabetes is a serious health concern, far fewer people know about prediabetes. Prediabetes is a serious but reversible condition that affects 86 million (more than 1 in 3) American adults. That 1 in 3 could be your brother or sister, your best friend or partner. And without healthy lifestyle changes, prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes.
People with prediabetes have higher than normal blood glucose (sugar) levels but not high enough yet to be considered type 2 diabetes. Basically, when you have prediabetes, you’re on the road to developing type 2 diabetes and are also at increased risk for other serious health problems such as stroke and heart disease. Current research estimates that 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes could develop type 2 diabetes within five years. And if that’s not scary enough, nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes don’t even know they have it.
But it’s not all bad news. With the right steps, prediabetes can be reversed. The key is to find out early whether you’re at risk.
But what exactly are those steps? Well, they’re things you already know you should be doing for a healthier lifestyle, like eating better, losing weight and getting at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. Yet while we all know this, life gets in the way and often makes it difficult to change our schedule or our habits. Meeting runs late? There goes your gym class. We’ve all been there.
The truth, though, is that no one is excused from prediabetes – no matter how busy we are. So don’t wait. Take a minute to find out your risk and know where you stand today.
