A little bug is bringing a lot of money into our state. $1.8 million dollars to be exact. That’s how much the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) is giving Arizona to fight the Zika virus.
The award is Arizona’s share of about $60 million that the CDC is awarding to states, cities and territories to support efforts to protect Americans from Zika virus disease and adverse health outcomes that can result from infection, including the serious birth defect microcephaly.
KPNX-TV quoted CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H, as saying, “Our local, state and territorial health departments are on the front lines in the fight against Zika, and though the necessary funding that is needed isn’t yet available, we cannot wait to provide this essential support. These CDC funds will strengthen state and territorial capacity to respond to Zika virus, an increasingly concerning public health threat.”
The Arizona Department of Health Services has confirmed 10 “travel associated” cases of the Zika virus in our state. According to KJZZ-Radio, Arizona will get the $1.8 million on August 1st and the Arizona Department of Health already has plans for it.
Dr. Cara Christ, state health department director, said that money will be used to fight Zika across the board. That means funds will be spent on education, surveillance and mosquito control, and on protecting pregnant women and creating a registry to monitor those who are infected with Zika.
Although there is still no known cure for the Zika virus, KNXV-TV put together a short video on a new vaccine that is about to be tested on people. Click here or on the video below to watch it.
Public health officials say one of the best things we can do to prevent the Zika virus is to protect ourselves from mosquito bites. That includes:
- avoiding travel to any of the infected regions;
- wearing long pants and long sleeve shirts;
- using an effective insect repellant; and
- making sure there is no standing water to serve as a breeding ground.
Let us know what you think about the approach Arizona is taking in developing a plan to battle the Zika virus and whether this $1.8 million dollar CDC grant will make a noticable difference for the people who live here. Creating conversations around the important health topics in our state is another way we hope to one day reach our goal of making Arizona the Healthiest State in the Nation!
