If you can quit for a day – you can quit for life. That’s the belief behind today’s Great American Smokeout…..an annual event that encourages people to kick the tobacco habit.
Many have probably wanted or tried to quit in the past but it can be a difficult, which is why the Great American Smokeout brings attention to the help that is available to smokers.
This year’s campaign in Arizona is Quit2Win, a weeklong social media campaign from November 14th to 18th. In collaboration with the Arizona ASHLine, the campaign hopes to successfully aid smokers in quitting tobacco through the help of professional Quit Coaches and the support of others. The Arizona ASHLine may be reached directly at 1-800-556-6222.
The Quit2Win website points out that when smokers work with a quit coach – they double their chances of quitting successfully. To learn more about finding and connecting with a quit coach in Arizona, you can contact Arizona ASHLine.
The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) claims that ASHLine “boasts a 40 percent quit rate which is among the leaders of quitlines nationally.”
Building on that idea – the American Cancer Society writes –
“Research shows that smokers are most successful in kicking the habit when they have support, such as:
- Telephone smoking-cessation hotlines
- Stop-smoking groups
- Online quit groups
- Nicotine replacement products
- Prescription medicine to lessen cravings
- Guide books
- Encouragement and support from friends and family members
Using 2 or more of these measures to quit works better than using any one of them alone.”
Arizona has come a long way. Our state is currently ranked 16th in the nation in smoking rates. The percentage of Arizonans who smoke has dropped from 29.5 percent 25 years ago to about 16.5 percent today. If we can use the Great American Smokeout to encourage even more people to quit…..that number will continue to drop. And the more it drops – the closer we get to our long-term goal of one day making Arizona the Healthiest State in the Nation!
